State of Cold Email 2026
We analyzed 1,455 outbound emails sent by 40 service businesses, SaaS teams, and agencies running campaigns on LeadClaw. The average open rate? 57.9%. Follow-ups beat initial outreach. And short emails win every time.

| Keep emails under 250 characters | 65.5% vs 22.8% for long emails | +42.7 pts |

| Send only one email with no follow-up | 28.5% of leads received no follow-up; lower overall engagement | Missed lift opportunity |
Open rate by industry vertical
SaaS and software senders see the highest open rates. AI/Automation and Marketing & Agencies senders run 13–14 points lower — likely a mix of inbox competition and audience engagement patterns.
| Sender Vertical | Avg Open Rate | vs Overall Avg (57.9%) | Sample (N) |
|---|---|---|---|
| SaaS / Software | 60.1% | +2.2 pts | 1,052 |
| Other B2B | 57.7% | -0.2 pts | 168 |
| AI / Automation | 47.5% | -10.4 pts | 141 |
| Marketing & Agencies | 46.3% | -11.6 pts | 67 |
Open rate by send time
The “10am local time” conventional wisdom doesn't hold up here. Pre-dawn UTC — overnight in the Americas — outperforms every other time block by 7 points over the worst slot.
| Send Time (UTC) | Approx. US Eastern | Open Rate | Sample (N) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 02:00–06:00 UTC | 10pm–2am ET | 61.7% | 287 |
| 06:00–10:00 UTC | 2am–6am ET | 60.1% | 173 |
| 14:00–18:00 UTC | 10am–2pm ET | 59.9% | 187 |
| 10:00–14:00 UTC | 6am–10am ET | 57.2% | 276 |
| 22:00–02:00 UTC | 6pm–10pm ET | 54.9% | 459 |
How we collected this data
Every number in this report comes from emails sent through LeadClaw between 2026-02-17 and 2026-05-15. That is 1,455 outbound emails across 31 campaigns run by 40 distinct businesses. Every email used a real domain, real warmup, and a real send schedule.
We tracked deliveries, opens, bounces, and message metadata using the Resend webhook pipeline that powers production. Open data is pixel-based. To avoid counting link-prefetch hits as human opens in the time-to-open chart, we excluded any open registered inside the first 36 seconds after send.
Verticals are derived from the sender business profile, not the recipient. We clustered into five groups (SaaS, Marketing & Agencies, AI / Automation, Real Estate, Other) and dropped any bucket with fewer than 50 emails to keep noise out. All bucket sample sizes are shown on every chart.
What this dataset is not: a panel of inboxes you can compare to your last campaign with eight sends. It is a snapshot of how outbound emails actually performed on a warmed, compliant, full-featured platform across real B2B verticals in 2026. Reply rates are not reported as a top-line cut because reply attribution depends on owner-side response logging, which was sparse in the window. We will publish reply cuts in a 2026-Q3 update.
Open rate by message type
Follow-ups out-open initial outreach by 9 points. The most replied-to email is rarely the first one you send.
| Bucket | Value | Sample (N) |
|---|---|---|
| Initial outreach | 54.1% | 826 |
| Follow-up | 63.1% | 605 |

Open rate by initial email length
Once the body crosses ~500 characters, open rates fall off a cliff. Short emails win on every reading device.
| Bucket | Value | Sample (N) |

| 0 to 250 chars | 65.5% | 119 |
| 251 to 500 chars | 56.3% | 632 |

The weekday spread is tighter than most playbooks claim. Saturday and Monday lead, but no day is a dead zone.
